Coolest Kid Party Ideas for a Spongebob Theme Birthday

The SpongeBob theme has some of the wackiest kid party ideas, so let’s party with the funniest sea creature and his underwater pals.

You’re all sure to soak up some SpongeBob fun!

First off, there’s a huge selection of SpongeBob party supplies and party packs. But don’t worry. You won’t need to browse around forever trying to find the best deal.

Just compare between the three packs below which cover pretty much all the SpongeBob party items on the market:

Spongebob Invitations

A cool SpongeBob invitation is the pineapple-in-the-ocean invitation.

Cut a piece of yellow tag board in the shape of a pineapple. It has to fit exactly inside a snack-size Ziploc bag. On the front of the tag board write something like:

“Who lives in a pineapple under the Sea?”, and then on the back you can write: “Sponge Bob Square Pants! He wants you to come, and party with me!”

Underneath can be your kids name, your address (add “Bikini Bottom” to the address), Cast-off (date), Dive time (start time), Resurface (end time), and “SEA you soon!!”.

In each bag place a small amount of sand, some sea-life confetti, small shells, etc. Seal them up and place them in envelopes (preferably blue). If you want to take this idea to a higher level (and the invitations will be hand delivered), after writing, laminate the tag board to ensure that it’s waterproof. Then float it in a zip-lock bag that’s filled halfway with water and blue food coloring, some sand and small shells. You can then glue a fridge magnet onto the bags for the guests to put on their refrigerator.

A variation, and one of my favorite kid party ideas, is to take the invitation, roll it up, tie green seaweed around it (green raffia or ribbon) and put the message in a small clear bottle. Add about 4 tablespoons of sand and small shells for more of the sea effect (one shell necklace can be cut apart, and will provide enough shells for about 10-12 invites).

Spongebob Decorations

The SpongeBob theme provides for fun kid party ideas for decorations you can make on your own.

Hang a sign on your front door that says “Bikini Bottom” (this is the city where SpongeBob and his friends live). You can also make a sign that says “The Krusty Krab” (SpongeBob is a fry cook there) and hang it in netting.

To create the ultimate Bikini Bottom setting hang teal, royal blue, sea-green and light blue crepe paper streamers of varying lengths from the ceiling to create the effect of being under the sea (you can glue cut-out fish to the ends and middles of these strips). Also hang fishnets and on them hang fish cutouts and various sea-life creatures.

In the doorways hang long green paper streamers for seaweed. You can also hang them from a clear fishing line to appear as if they’re swimming around.

Don’t forget to hang jellyfish made from half-cut paper plates with streamers attached to resemble tentacles, and sprinkle various SpongeBob accessories your kids may have. Then, add some goofy items that pay tribute to the whit, whimsy wackiness of the world of Sponge Bob and friends.

Add a giant tissue pineapple, tiki masks, surfboard standees (you can make from cardboard), and even a few white brief-style undies!! Feel free to go crazy with these fun SpongeBob kid party ideas.

Get a few rolls of brown paper (the kind used in houses that are under construction) and place it on the floor to give the appearance of a sandy ocean floor. Also, place lots of blue-shaded balloons on the floor to create an ocean effect. You can put towels all around and disperse all kinds of sand toys.

On the tables, put a blue tablecloth with green strips across and hanging down from the edges (for seaweed). You can add fish to the end of each strip. Seashells can be used as table confetti and you can also cover the tablecloth with fish net.

Tie napkins with shell necklaces or glitter jelly bracelets. Get some real pineapples, take each one, cut a few inches off the bottom so that it has a flat edge to stand on, then cut out two squares and a rectangle from light blue construction paper and glue them onto the pineapple as two windows and a door.

If you have flourescent lights, take blue and green crepe paper and cover the exterior of the lights so it gives the room a watery appearance. You can also buy some blue and green light bulbs to put around the house to really give SpongeBob’s under-the-sea kind of feeling.

Another good way to achieve this effect (if you are having your child birthday party during the day) is to buy blue and green cellophane paper and cover all the windows in the house and enjoy the blue-greenish light immerse the house.

In the background, play the fun Spongebob soundtrack CD and have the kids Freeze Dance to all the catchy and kitschy tunes! Bubbles always make for fun kid party ideas, especially for the SpongeBob theme. Get lots of bubble bottles and bubble guns and blow bubbles across the room while you watch the kids race around trying to pop them.

Spongebob Icebreaker Activities

Make SpongeBobs!

This is one of the coolest kid party ideas for a SpongeBob icebreaker activity… Get a bunch of regular-sized yellow sponges, yellow and white pipe cleaner (for the legs and arms). Have some markers, craft paint, glue, white paper, brown paper, red paper for the tie, and have the kids create their own SpongBobs. Make sure they have a few pictures of SpongeBob around to inspire their creativity.

Get a bunch of sponges and let the kids dab them into paint and then on paper to make all kinds of designs.

SpongeBob in a Bottle

Each kid gets a baby food jar (or any other little jar or clear water bottle for that matter). They then add small sea beads, glitter, water, baby oil and blue food coloring to create their own ocean. Then for the finale, you can print out many small SpongeBobs, laminate them, and have the kids put them into their oceans (hot-glue the tops on so the ocean doesn’t spill on your floor…). This is one of the best kid party ideas for make-your-own favors.

Drawing SpongeBob

You’ll need white paper plates, pencils and pictures of SpongeBob and his friends. Get the kids to sit in a circle and hand out a paper plate and pencil to each. Tell the kids to put the plates on top of their heads. Now, show a picture of SpongeBob and tell the kids to draw him (while the plates are still on their heads). Have everyone show their works of art and repeat this with the other characters.

Balloon Octopuses

Draw an octopus body (draw it so that it looks like a sun with 8 tentacles) on paper and make many copies of this. Then have the kids cut them out and decorate them with markers, glitter, stickers etc. Punch holes in the center and inflate small balloons to put their tips in the holes, securing them to the back of the body with tape. Let the kids draw faces on the balloons with permanent markers.

Sea Shell Treasure Hunt Necklace Activity

Use a sandbox or fill a plastic swimming pool with sand. Add a bunch of different sea shells (the ones with the little holes in them) and cover them with sand. Let the kids search for the shells and make necklaces out of them (give them string).

Here are some kid party ideas for your SpongeBob birthday party cuisine. Remember to put small signs on each dish just to make sure everyone understands that they are munching on real SpongeBob food:

SpongeBob Ocean Slushy – Mix 3 cups of ice, 3 cups of blue sports drink or punch, and 3 large scoops vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt in a blender. Whirl until smooth and serve (place the shake in the freezer for a thicker shake).
Blue Punch (Put gummy fishes or gummy sharks inside. You can also freeze the gummy fish and sharks in cubes of ice)
Pop Rock Punch (This is another variation of the Blue Punch. After you’ve placed a filled glass in front of each guest, add some seaweed dust (a few Pop Rocks candies) to each cup. It will then crackle, pop, and split when it comes into contact with the liquid.)

Another one of those kid party ideas the guests will love taking home is their own small sponge-painting kit. Include dry sponges cut into shapes and a small container of tempera or craft paint.
